Impatiens
Gardeners have always loved Impatiens for shady gardens for their ease of growth and beautiful array of colours, and today gardeners are spoilt for choice. Breeders continue to surprise with brilliant new garden hybrids. They flower from spring into winter, need no special care, and provide a swathe of colour in shady beds. Some can even be grown in full sun and take heat and humidity, much to the delight of gardeners around South Africa. The exciting varieties ensure that Impatiens remains one of our most popular summer bedding plants.
Impatiens walleriana Beacon grows into a tidy, mounded plant 25 – 30cm high and wide, with flowers carried on top of the leaves. The initial flower colour range consists of bright red, salmon, white, violet shades, orange, and coral. New colours will be introduced annually. Plants are identifiable in stores from other varieties by a ‘Beacon’ label.
Impatiens walleriana Imara also grows to the same height, not quite as compact and with a looser shape. It grows equally well in partial shade or shade. It also flowers prolifically, grows vigorously and has nine colours, which include rose, orange star and a mix.
Impatiens hawkerii - New Guinea Clockwork - is a strong upgrade to the popular Celebrette series. It has a height of 20 - 25cm and a spread of 25 - 30cm. It flowers all summer long and is ideal for containers, baskets and bedding. It prefers partial shade and won’t perform in the sun like the interspecific Sunpatiens. It is more compact and ideal for front of beds, borders and containers. This series truly performs like clockwork with a fantastic large range of colours.
Impatiens hawkerii - New Guinea Florific – is the only seed grown New Guinea impatiens. It is available in four colours red, white lavender and violet. Florific features large, premium flowers that sit above the foliage. With Continual free flowering and high-impact colour. These plants are ideal for shady landscape beds or containers as an alternative for Impatiens walleriana. They are resistant to downy mildew so its sustained beauty and performance all season long.

Who says impatiens aren’t for full sun?
Impatiens New Guinea Harmony are sun and heat tolerant. They feature a palette of colours guaranteed to brighten any setting - whether in the strongest sun or milder partial shade locations. Even at the peak of summer, the plants remain covered in flowers. All of the varieties in the series feature highly branched, mounded, compact habits. Large, 5cm rounded flowers are held above medium green leaves. Blooming profusely and continuously from early spring through to autumn Sun Harmony varieties offer excellent garden performance. Plants grow 16 to 20 in. tall in the garden and their thick, succulent stems and sturdy habit make them a durable favourite.
Impatiens Sunpatiens boasts the inherent capabilities to endure the environmental conditions that would cause walleriana types or traditional New Guinea varieties to shrivel and burn, but also delivers brilliant shows of massive colour from spring to frost. The truly unique genetic background of SunPatiens® delivers unsurpassed garden performance like no other flowering annual. They have strong roots that take hold quickly and are resistant to soil pests. The plants thrive under high heat, rain and humidity. They show full-sun to shade versatility requiring the following optimum amount of sun or shade to thrive – full sun (6+ hours), part shade (4 - 6 hours) and a full shade (up to 4 hours) and if given this they will flower for the whole of spring and summer. They are carefree, low-maintenance plants with low fertiliser requirements and are self-cleaning. They show strong insect and disease resistance and are not impacted by downy mildew or snails. Their height is 40 – 60cm and they should be planted 40cm apart. There are 3 series to cover all bases in a garden:
- Compact Series: Compact SunPatiens are bred for shorter internodes and excellent branching for a dense, bushy plant. Available in seven colours, compact SunPatiens are the perfect choice for hanging baskets. They also provide excellent garden performance and worry free, low maintenance across 3 seasons.
- Spreading Series: Spreading SunPatiens have a mounding habit, versus the more upright, vase-shape of the vigorous series. Ideally suited for basket and premium patio pots, these plants also perform exceptionally well in landscapes, where a rounded, spreading form is preferred.
- Vigorous Series: The vigorous SunPatiens name says it all. It’s the perfect plant where fast growing colour is needed. These plants cover a lot of bare ground fast and are ideal for economical, long-lasting ground cover.
